1. On July 19, 1764, the first circulating library in America was founded in Newport, Rhode Island. The Redwood Library and Athenaeum allowed members to borrow books and provided a space for intellectual discussion.

2. In 1843, July 19th marked the founding of the Rhode Island State Normal School, which later became Rhode Island College. The school was established to train teachers and its alumni include influential education leaders.

3. On July 19, 1952, the Rhode Island State Police became the first law enforcement agency in the nation to use helicopters. The helicopters were used for search and rescue missions as well as to assist with law enforcement operations.

4. In 1979, July 19th marked the opening of the Providence Place Mall, which is one of the largest shopping malls in New England. The mall has over 170 stores and is a popular destination for tourists and locals alike.

5. On July 19, 1991, the USS Gurnard, a submarine built in Rhode Island, was decommissioned. The Gurnard served in several conflicts, including the Cold War and Operation Desert Storm. Its final resting place is now in Hawaii as a part of the Pacific Fleet Submarine Museum.
