2. On July 21, 1774, the Rhode Island General Assembly became the first governing body in the American colonies to pass a resolution in response to the Coercive Acts, a series of measures imposed by the British government in response to the Boston Tea Party.

3. In 1864, the Lonsdale Company, a textile manufacturer in Lincoln, Rhode Island, was founded by eight men who pooled their resources to build a factory on the banks of the Blackstone River. The company soon became one of the largest producers of worsted wool in the world.

4. On July 21, 1923, the state legislature ratified the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which granted women the right to vote. Rhode Island was the 26th state to do so, helping to secure the amendment's passage.

5. In 2000, the USS Providence, a nuclear-powered submarine named after the capital city, was commissioned by the U.S. Navy. The submarine has been involved in numerous missions and has received several awards throughout its service.
