1. In 1818, Alabama became the 22nd state in the United States, after being carved out of the Mississippi Territory. To celebrate the occasion, a town was named "Alabama City" in present-day Etowah County.

2. The first recorded steamboat to travel the waters of Alabama arrived on July 26, 1821. The boat, named the "General Jackson," made its way up the Tombigbee River to St. Stephens, which was then the territorial capital of Alabama.

3. On July 26, 1861, Confederate General P.G.T. Beauregard issued a proclamation declaring the town of Huntsville, Alabama to be the "Center of Operations" for Confederate forces in North Alabama.

4. The Birmingham-Hoover Metropolitan Statistical Area, which includes portions of five counties in Alabama, was officially designated as a metropolitan area on July 26, 2013. The area is home to more than 1.1 million people.

5. On July 26, 2014, the remains of 31 unidentified victims of the 1963 bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham were laid to rest in a Birmingham cemetery. The bombing, which killed four young girls and injured 22 others, was a turning point in the Civil Rights Movement.
