4. The Chesapeake and Ohio Canal, which runs from Cumberland to Georgetown, was completed in 1850. It opened up a new transportation route from the Chesapeake Bay to the Ohio River.

In 1933, the first non-stop transcontinental flight from east to west was completed by Clyde Edward Pangborn and Hugh Herndon Jr. who landed in Wenatchee, Washington, after flying from Roosevelt Field, New York. They flew a Bellanca J-300 aircraft that was nicknamed "Miss Veedol," after the oil company that sponsored the flight.
