1) On June 1, 1863, Union forces under General David Hunter captured the city of Columbia, South Carolina during the Civil War. They soon after burned the city, resulting in widespread destruction and devastation.

2) In 1926, the South Carolina Highway Department was created on June 1, tasked with constructing and maintaining highways throughout the state. Today, it is known as the South Carolina Department of Transportation.

3) On June 1, 1968, James Earl Ray, the assassin of Martin Luther King Jr., was arrested at Heathrow Airport in London while attempting to leave the country. He was extradited back to the United States and later pled guilty to the murder.

4) In 1985, the South Carolina state flag was officially adopted on June 1. It features a palmetto tree and crescent moon on a blue background, representing the state's history and geography.

5) On June 1, 1990, the historic South Carolina State House underwent a major renovation, including the addition of a dome and restoration of the building's original design. The project was completed in 1997, and the State House now stands as a prominent landmark in the city of Columbia.
