1. Arizona became a state on June 12, 1912. It was the 48th state to be admitted to the United States, and the last of the contiguous states to join the union.

2. The first governor of Arizona, George W. P. Hunt, was inaugurated on June 12, 1912. Hunt would go on to serve a total of seven terms as governor, making him the longest-serving governor in Arizona history.

3. The Arizona Diamondbacks played their first home game on June 12, 1998. The Diamondbacks defeated the San Francisco Giants 3-2 in front of a capacity crowd at Bank One Ballpark (now Chase Field).

4. On June 12, 1979, the deadliest crash in aviation history occurred in Arizona. American Airlines Flight 191 crashed shortly after takeoff from Chicago's O'Hare airport, killing all 271 people on board, as well as two people on the ground.

5. June 12 is also known as Loving Day, in honor of the Supreme Court decision in Loving v. Virginia, which struck down laws banning interracial marriage. The decision was handed down on June 12, 1967, and has been celebrated as a symbol of love and diversity ever since.
