1. On June 13, 1861, Missouri Governor Claiborne Fox Jackson and the state legislature voted to join the Confederacy. However, many Missourians opposed the decision and the state became a divided region during the Civil War.

2. In 1903, the first Transcontinental Automobile Trip began in San Francisco, with the goal of reaching New York City. One of the drivers on this historic journey was George Schuster, a native of Missouri.

3. On June 13, 1927, aviator Charles Lindbergh landed his aircraft, the Spirit of St. Louis, in Paris, France after flying across the Atlantic Ocean. Lindbergh, who was born in Michigan but grew up in Missouri, became a national hero for his historic solo flight.

4. In 1977, a massive storm system produced 17 tornadoes across Missouri, causing significant damage and claiming 3 lives. The town of Pierce City was especially hard hit, with over half of its homes destroyed.

5. On June 13, 2013, the Missouri Department of Conservation announced that the peregrine falcon, a once-endangered species, was successfully breeding in the state once again. Conservation efforts had helped the bird population rebound and thrive in Missouri.
