1. In 1931, the state of Nevada legalized gambling, which has since become a major industry in the state. Many of Nevada's famous casinos, such as the Sands and the Flamingo, were developed in the decades that followed.

2. On June 13, 1968, a fire broke out at the MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas, killing 85 people and injuring more than 700. The incident remains one of the deadliest hotel fires in U.S. history.

3. In 1996, the Nevada Test Site was renamed as the Nevada National Security Site. The site, located about 65 miles northwest of Las Vegas, was used for nuclear weapons testing from the 1950s until the early 1990s.

4. On June 13, 2000, the United States Supreme Court upheld a Nevada law that allowed legal brothels in the state. Prostitution is still legal in some parts of Nevada today.

5. In 2013, a wildfire broke out near the town of Pioche, Nevada, burning more than 8,000 acres of land. The fire threatened several homes and buildings, but no injuries or fatalities were reported.
