1. On June 16, 1816, the Yale Alumni Association was established. A group of Yale graduates gathered in New Haven to form the organization, which has since grown to include thousands of members worldwide.

2. In 1886, the Connecticut Mutual Life Insurance Company was founded on June 16. It was the first mutual life insurance company in the state, and would eventually become one of the largest insurers in the United States.

3. On June 16, 1903, the Hartford Public High School opened its doors for the first time. The school was the first public high school in Hartford and one of the oldest in the country. Today, it serves more than 1,300 students.

4. Bridgeport's Beardsley Park Zoo was established on June 16, 1920, making it one of the state's oldest zoos. Today, the zoo is home to a variety of animals, including tigers, wolves, and bison.

5. In 1967, the Hartford Whalers were founded on June 16 as a member of the World Hockey Association (WHA). The team would later join the National Hockey League (NHL), playing in Hartford until 1997 before relocating to North Carolina.
