1. On June 17, 1875, William Vaughn Moody, a noted American playwright and poet, was born in Spencer, Tennessee. Moody's most famous play, "The Great Divide," premiered on Broadway in 1906.

2. Five years later, on June 17, 1880, the first official meeting of the Tennessee Bar Association was held in Nashville. The organization has since grown to become one of the largest voluntary bar associations in the country, with over 11,000 members.
