2. On June 2, 1922, the first airplane to cross the Appalachian Mountains landed in Charleston, West Virginia. The flight was piloted by Walter T. Varney, who later founded Varney Airlines, which eventually became United Airlines.

3. In 1947, West Virginia native Chuck Yeager became the first person to break the sound barrier in level flight. Yeager's record-setting flight took place over the Mojave Desert in California.

4. On June 2, 1969, the first cultural heritage museum in the United States was established in Huntington, West Virginia. The Huntington Museum of Art features an extensive collection of American decorative and fine art, as well as a range of historical and cultural exhibits.

5. In 2016, the West Virginia Floods took place on June 2, causing widespread damage and resulting in the deaths of 23 people. The floods were caused by heavy rainfall that caused rivers and streams to overflow their banks, devastating many communities throughout the state.
