1. In 1874, George Armstrong Custer and his 7th Cavalry depart Fort Abraham Lincoln in Bismarck, North Dakota on their ultimately fatal expedition against the Sioux in the Battle of Little Big Horn. This ill-fated mission ended in the massacre of Custer and his men.

2. On June 22, 1938, an F5 tornado strikes the town of Woonsocket, South Dakota, leaving destruction and death in its wake. This deadly storm killed 6 people and wiped out many homes and businesses in the small town.

3. In 1972, the Yankton Sioux Tribe becomes the first federally recognized tribe in South Dakota to establish a gaming enterprise. The tribe opened the Fort Randall Casino on their reservation, which has since become a popular tourist attraction in the area.

4. June 22, 1987 saw the dedication of the Akta Lakota Museum & Cultural Center on the campus of St. Joseph's Indian School in Chamberlain, South Dakota. The museum celebrates the rich history and culture of the Lakota people and features a wide variety of exhibits and artifacts.

5. In 2002, the newly constructed Dignity Statue was unveiled near Chamberlain, South Dakota.
