1. In 1665, the first marriage between English colonists and Native Americans took place in Massachusetts. John Alderman, an Englishman, married Hannah, a Wampanoag woman.

2. On June 23, 1757, the Battle of Great Barrington took place during the French and Indian War. The British forces, led by Lieutenant Colonel John Bradstreet, defeated the French forces and their Native American allies.

3. The Massachusetts State House cornerstone was laid on June 23, 1795. The building, which is still in use today, is located on Beacon Hill in Boston and is the seat of the state government.

4. The Salem witch trials began on June 23, 1692, when Bridget Bishop was tried and found guilty of witchcraft. This sparked a frenzy of accusations and trials that ultimately resulted in the execution of 19 people.

5. In 1863, the 54th Massachusetts Infantry, one of the first African American regiments in the Civil War, departed from Boston for South Carolina. The 54th played a pivotal role in the Battle of Fort Wagner and helped to pave the way for future integration of the U.S. military.
