1. In 1904, the first auto parts store in the United States opened in Detroit. Located on Jefferson Avenue, the store was called the Detroit Auto Supply Company and sold parts for the growing number of automobiles on Michigan's roads.

2. On June 3, 1937, the Detroit Zoo opened its doors to the public for the first time. The zoo, located on Woodward Avenue, featured a variety of animal exhibits and quickly became a popular destination for families in the Detroit area.

3. In 1968, the musical "Hair" made its Michigan debut at the Fisher Theatre in Detroit. The controversial show about hippie culture and the anti-war movement was a major hit and played to sold-out crowds for several weeks.

4. On June 3, 1997, the Michigan State University men's basketball team won their first NCAA championship. Led by star player Mateen Cleaves, the Spartans beat the University of Kentucky 89-76 in the championship game.

5. In 2014, a major flooding event occurred in the Detroit area following heavy rainfall. The flooding caused widespread damage and left many residents without power for several days. Michigan Governor Rick Snyder declared a state of emergency in several counties as a result of the flooding.
