1. In 1632, the land of Maryland was granted to Lord Baltimore by Charles I. This paved the way for the establishment of the colony and the eventual founding of the state. Today, Maryland celebrates Maryland Day on March 25, the day the first colonists arrived in 1634.

4. On June 30, 1972, the first African-American woman to serve as a United States Attorney was appointed in Maryland. Her name was George Beall and she served until 1975.

5. In 2018, the Supreme Court ruled on a case originating from Maryland. In Maryland, the state had drawn congressional districts with the goal of ensuring that at least one seat would be won by a Democrat. The case, Gill v. Whitford, addressed the constitutionality of partisan gerrymandering and set a precedent for future redistricting cases.
