1. In 1873, the Newport Casino was opened in Newport. It was one of the first buildings to use the Shingle Style of architecture and was once a popular destination for the wealthy during the Gilded Age.

2. On June 30, 1908, Rhode Island officially adopted a state flag. The flag features a gold anchor surrounded by thirteen gold stars on a field of white and blue.

3. In 1926, the East Providence Police Department was established. Today, the department has over 100 sworn officers and serves a population of approximately 47,000 people.

4. On June 30, 1936, the infamous Rhode Island Hurricane struck the state, causing widespread damage and claiming the lives of over 100 people. The storm is still considered one of the most devastating in Rhode Island history.

5. In 1959, the USS Providence (SSN-719) was launched at the General Dynamics Electric Boat shipyard in Groton, Connecticut. The submarine was commissioned in 1985 and served until its decommissioning in 2020, making it one of the longest-serving submarines in U.S. Navy history.
