1. In 1902, the first automobile in Indiana was registered in Indianapolis. The car was a Winton "runabout" and cost $1,600.

2. On June 9, 1917, Indiana enacted a law prohibiting alcohol sales within one mile of any military base or naval facility. This was in response to World War I and concerns about soldiers being distracted by drinking.

3. Indianapolis Motor Speedway first opened on June 9, 1909, with a total of 15,000 people in attendance. The first race took place on August 19 of that same year, and the speedway has since become a fixture in the world of racing.

4. In 1962, Purdue University alumnus Neil Armstrong became the first American to orbit the Earth. He did so aboard the Gemini VIII spacecraft, which launched on March 16, 1966.

5. On June 9, 1983, the first official night game was played at the newly-constructed Three Rivers Stadium in Pittsburgh. The Pirates defeated the San Diego Padres 5-4 in this historic event.
