1. In 1862, during the Civil War, Confederate forces under General Nathan Bedford Forrest attacked and captured the Union garrison at Brentwood, Tennessee. The engagement, which became known as the Battle of Brentwood, resulted in approximately 500 Union casualties and 60 Confederate casualties.

2. On March 13, 1897, the Tennessee State Capitol building in Nashville was formally dedicated. Designed by noted architect William Strickland in the Greek Revival style, the capitol is one of the most iconic landmarks in Tennessee.

3. In 1944, a massive explosion occurred at the United States Army Air Force base in Memphis, killing 15 people and injuring dozens more. The explosion was caused by a fire in a gasoline storage area, and caused extensive damage to nearby homes and businesses.

4. On March 13, 1965, civil rights activist James Meredith began a protest march from Memphis to Jackson, Mississippi. Meredith, who had previously gained national attention as the first African American to attend the University of Mississippi, aimed to highlight ongoing discrimination against Black Mississippians.

5. In 2015, a massive sinkhole opened up near the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, Kentucky, just across the border from Tennessee. The sinkhole, which measured 60 feet wide and 30 feet deep, swallowed eight of the museum's classic Corvettes, causing millions of dollars in damage. The museum was able to salvage and restore most of the damaged vehicles.
