2. On March 13, 1933, the West Virginia Legislature approved a bill allowing municipalities to form "parking authorities" to regulate parking within their limits. This paved the way for the creation of the Charleston Parking Authority, which still operates today.

3. The Battle of Point Pleasant, considered the first battle of the American Revolution, took place on October 10, 1774, but it was on March 13, 1775 that colonial authorities officially declared victory over a confederation of Native American tribes led by Shawnee chief Cornstalk.

4. On March 13, 1863, Confederate forces under General William "Grumble" Jones raided the town of Chambersburg, West Virginia, destroying several buildings and taking more than $200,000 worth of goods.

5. In 1974, United Airlines Flight 823 crashed near Thacker, West Virginia, killing all 17 passengers and crew on board. The cause of the crash was determined to be pilot error combined with poor weather conditions.
