1. Maine became a state on March 15, 1820, but the process leading up to statehood began on March 14, 1819, when the Missouri Compromise was signed into law by President James Monroe. This compromise allowed Maine's admission to the Union as a free state, while Missouri was admitted as a slave state.

2. March 14, 1851, marked the establishment of the Maine Medical Association. This association was founded to promote the science and practice of medicine in the state, and it still serves as the primary professional organization for Maine's medical community.

3. In 1862, the Battle of New Bern took place in North Carolina, but many of the soldiers involved were from Maine. March 14 was a particularly deadly day of this battle, with more than 200 Union soldiers from Maine killed or wounded.
