1. In 1622, the Powhatan Indian tribe launched a surprise attack on Virginia colonists, resulting in the death of hundreds of settlers. This event, known as the Indian Massacre of 1622, took place on March 14.

5. In 1960, protests against segregation in Virginia led to the "Sit-In Movement," in which African American students staged nonviolent protests at segregated lunch counters. On March 14, 1960, demonstrators held their first sit-in at a Woolworth's lunch counter in Richmond, sparking a wave of sit-ins across the state and the country.
