2. On March 18, 1909, Robert E. Peary, a Maine native, became the first person to reach the North Pole, leading an expedition that included four Inuit assistants. Peary's achievement was the culmination of more than two decades of polar exploration.

3. On March 18, 1925, Maine became the first state in the country to have a fully paved road, when a 10-mile stretch of Route 1 was completed between Kittery and Portland. The project, which cost approximately $250,000, was completed in just under two years.

4. On March 18, 1956, Maine's largest recorded earthquake occurred, measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale. The earthquake was centered in the town of Sanford and was felt as far away as Connecticut and Nova Scotia.

5. On March 18, 1962, Maine's own Louis Oosthuizen was born. The professional golfer has had a successful career, with highlights including winning the British Open in 2010 and finishing as runner-up in the Masters tournament in 2012. Oosthuizen has also been named to the President's Cup and Ryder Cup teams.
