1. In 1836, the Battle of Coleto Creek took place near Goliad, Texas. This battle was part of the Texas Revolution and resulted in the capture of nearly 400 Texans by Mexican forces under General Jose de Urrea.

2. On March 20, 1848, the Texas legislature officially approved the state's first public school system. This decision paved the way for the establishment of a statewide education system that still exists today.
