1) In 1901, the Nebraska Legislature created the Nebraska State Historical Society to collect and preserve the history of the state. The Society maintains a website and extensive library open to visitors.
2) In 1977, the Nebraska Cornhuskers basketball team won the National Invitation Tournament (NIT) championship.
3) In 1985, the Nebraska Legislature declared the Western Meadowlark as Nebraska's official state bird. The Meadowlark is known for its melodic song and can be seen throughout the state.
4) In 1864, the Battle of Mine Creek occurred in Kansas, just a few miles south of the Nebraska border. This was the largest cavalry battle of the Civil War and some Nebraska soldiers participated on both sides.
5) In 2013, a severe snowstorm hit parts of Nebraska, causing widespread power outages and damage to roads and property. Some areas received up to 20 inches of snow, making it one of the largest March snowstorms on record.
