1. Vermont was admitted to the United States as the 14th state on March 4, 1791. However, it wasn't until March 26, 1791 that the Vermont General Assembly officially accepted the terms of the state's admission and ratified the US Constitution. This made Vermont the first state to join the Union after the original 13 colonies.

2. On March 26, 1807, Vermont Governor Isaac Tichenor approved a bill that abolished slavery in the state. Vermont had already taken steps to restrict slavery prior to this, but this law made it illegal for anyone to own or trade slaves in the state.

3. In 1863, the town of St. Albans, Vermont became the site of the northernmost battle of the American Civil War. A group of Confederate soldiers, led by a man named Bennett H. Young, raided the town and attempted to rob its banks. They were eventually captured and brought to trial in Canada, where they were acquitted of any wrongdoing.

4. On March 26, 1885, Vermont became the first state in the US to pass a law allowing women to vote in school board elections. This was a significant step towards women's suffrage, which would not be achieved nationally until the 19th Amendment was ratified in 1920.

5. In more recent history, March 26, 2007 marked the opening of the Vermont Rail System's new intermodal terminal in Rutland. The terminal, which is still in operation, allows for the transfer of cargo between rail and truck transportation and has helped to revitalize the city's economy.
