1. In 1922, the Kentucky General Assembly passed legislation establishing the Kentucky State Park System. This important program would go on to create some of the most iconic natural spaces in the state, such as Mammoth Cave National Park and Lake Cumberland State Resort Park.

2. In 1978, legendary horse trainer Woody Stephens won his second Kentucky Derby with a horse named Affirmed. Stephens, who trained many other successful horses over his long career, is widely regarded as one of the greatest horse trainers of all time.

3. On March 27, 1862, Confederate General Nathan Bedford Forrest attacked and defeated Union troops at the Battle of Lexington. This important Civil War engagement helped to cement Forrest's reputation as a brilliant military strategist.

4. In 1998, Kentucky Governor Paul Patton signed legislation making Kentucky the first state to implement a statewide kindergarten screening program. This innovative program helps to ensure that every child entering kindergarten in Kentucky is adequately prepared for the challenges of formal education.

5. On March 27, 1945, Kentucky native and future basketball Hall of Famer Cliff Hagan played his first game for the University of Kentucky Wildcats. Hagan went on to have an illustrious career as both a player and coach, ultimately being inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1978.
