1. On March 28, 1865, the Battle of Averasborough took place in North Carolina during the Civil War. Much of the Confederate force was made up of Georgia soldiers, and the battle resulted in a Union victory.

2. On March 28, 1947, the Georgia State Senate ratified the 22nd Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which limits the number of terms a president can serve.

3. On March 28, 1965, civil rights activists in Georgia organized a march from Selma, Alabama to the state capitol in Montgomery to protest voting discrimination. The march was one of several that took place during the Civil Rights Movement.

4. On March 28, 1980, the Georgia Dome in Atlanta officially opened. The stadium served as the home of the Atlanta Falcons football team and hosted numerous events, including the 1996 Olympic Games.

5. On March 28, 2012, former Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin was inducted into the National Women's Hall of Fame. Franklin was the first African American woman to serve as mayor of a major Southern city.
