2. Largest Tornado Outbreak: On March 4, 1976, Indiana witnessed the largest tornado outbreak in its history. A total of 12 tornadoes raged through the state, killing 34 people and injuring hundreds more. This event is still remembered as one of the deadliest tornado outbreaks in the United States.

3. Interstate Highway System: The Indiana portion of the Interstate Highway System was officially opened on March 4th, 1955. The first stretch of I-65, running from Gary to Lowell, opened to motorists on this day. The highway was the result of a national plan signed into law by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1956.
