1. In 1801, Thomas Jefferson was inaugurated as the third President of the United States on March 4th in Washington D.C. This was the first time a President was inaugurated in the nation’s new capital city.
2. On March 4th, 1905, President Theodore Roosevelt was inaugurated for his second term. His inaugural parade was the largest the city had ever seen, with over 33,000 participants.
3. March 4th, 1913 marked the inauguration of Woodrow Wilson as the 28th President of the United States. Wilson was the first President to hold his inauguration on the East Portico of the U.S. Capitol Building.
4. On March 4th, 1933, Franklin D. Roosevelt was inaugurated for his first term as President in the midst of the Great Depression. His inaugural address included his famous words, “the only thing we have to fear is fear itself.”
5. In 2001, a month after the inauguration of George W. Bush, a commemorative stamp was issued by the United States Postal Service to honor all the U.S. Presidents who had been inaugurated on March 4th. This stamp featured images of Thomas Jefferson, James Polk, and Woodrow Wilson.
