1. In 1912, the city of Jacksonville, Florida was officially incorporated. Today, it is the largest city in Florida by population and the 12th largest city in the United States.

2. In 1936, the Florida Supreme Court ruled that the state's anti-mask law, which had been put in place to combat the Ku Klux Klan, was unconstitutional. The law had made it illegal to wear a mask, hood or other disguise in public, with a few exceptions. The ruling paved the way for peaceful demonstrations and other forms of public protest.

3. In 1978, the Florida State Capitol building in Tallahassee was the site of a hostage crisis. A group of six armed men took over the building, demanding that their leader, who was serving a prison sentence, be released. The standoff lasted for several hours and ended peacefully when the hostage-takers surrendered and the hostages were unharmed.

4. In 1984, the Space Shuttle Challenger made its eighth and final mission, launching from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Tragically, the mission ended in disaster when the shuttle exploded just 73 seconds after liftoff, killing all seven crew members.

5. In 2018, the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting took place in Parkland, Florida. Seventeen people were killed and many more were injured in one of the deadliest school shootings in American history. The tragedy sparked a nationwide debate about gun control and school safety.
