1. May 1, 1776 marked the start of the "Cooch's Bridge Massacre" in Newark, Delaware. This battle was the only Revolutionary War conflict to take place on Delaware soil and resulted in the death of more than 30 American soldiers.

2. On May 1, 1783, Delaware became the first state to ratify the Treaty of Paris, officially ending the Revolutionary War and recognizing the independence of the United States from Great Britain.

3. May 1, 1861 saw the formation of the "Union League of Delaware," a group of men dedicated to supporting the Union during the Civil War. The League played a significant role in recruiting soldiers from Delaware and organizing relief efforts for soldiers and their families.

4. In 1893, May 1 marked the official opening of the Delaware State Hospital, a psychiatric hospital in New Castle that served as the primary mental health facility in the state for more than a century.

5. More recently, May 1, 2017 marked the 10th anniversary of Delaware's smoking ban, which prohibits smoking in indoor public places and places of employment. The law was passed in 2007 in an effort to improve public health and reduce exposure to secondhand smoke.
