1) May 1, 1822 - The first state constitution of Indiana was signed into law, establishing the framework for the state government and granting citizens certain rights and protections.

2) May 1, 1865 - In Indianapolis, about 1,500 soldiers from the Indiana Volunteer Infantry Regiment returned home from the Civil War after serving for three years.

3) May 1, 1936 - In what is known as the Gary sit-down strike, workers at the United States Steel Corporation in Gary, Indiana occupied their workplace and refused to leave until their demands for better working conditions and pay were met.

4) May 1, 1954 - The Indiana High School Athletic Association held its first baseball state championship game at Victory Field in Indianapolis. The game was won by South Bend Central High School.

5) May 1, 1960 - The Indianapolis Motor Speedway hosted the 500 Festival Open Invitational, a golf tournament that ran alongside the Indianapolis 500 race. The event was won by professional golfer Arnold Palmer.
