1. In 1937, the West Virginia State Capitol building in Charleston was officially dedicated. The Capitol, which stands at 292 feet tall with 535 rooms, was completed after 4 years of construction, costing $10 million. It remains the tallest building in West Virginia.

2. On May 11, 1864, Union General David Hunter led an attack on the town of Saltville in southwestern Virginia, which was a critical source of salt for the Confederacy during the Civil War. Although the Union forces were initially successful in capturing key points in the town, they were eventually repelled by Confederate forces and forced to retreat.

3. In 2020, on May 11, West Virginia Governor Jim Justice announced that the state's stay-at-home order would be lifted on May 21, citing a decline in COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations. However, the governor urged residents to remain cautious and continue practicing social distancing measures.

4. On May 11, 1905, the Raven Rocks train wreck occurred just outside of Martinsburg. Two freight trains collided head-on, killing the train crew and destroying several rail cars. The accident was blamed on a miscommunication between the train dispatchers.

5. In 1921, on May 11, the notorious outlaw and bank robber, Wilbur Underhill, was shot and killed by law enforcement officers in Huntington. Underhill had been wanted for a string of bank robberies across the Midwest and had been on the run for several years. His death marked the end of his crime spree.
