1. In 1913, the Alaska Native Brotherhood was founded in Sitka, Alaska. The organization was established to address issues faced by Alaska Natives, such as discrimination and lack of representation in government.

2. On May 14, 1934, an earthquake measuring 8.1 on the Richter scale struck near Yakutat, Alaska. This earthquake caused a tsunami that devastated the coastal villages of Yakutat, Killisnoo, and Angoon, resulting in the loss of many lives and significant damage to property.

3. In 1959, Alaska was officially recognized as a state of the United States on May 14. The statehood act, signed by President Dwight D. Eisenhower earlier in the year, officially made Alaska the 49th state of the United States.

4. On May 14, 1988, a massive wildfire broke out in the Black Spruce forests of central Alaska, eventually burning more than 1.2 million acres and causing millions of dollars in damage. Known as the "Black Dragon Fire," it was one of the largest wildfires in Alaska's history.

5. In 1998, the Alaska Railroad Corporation celebrated its 75th anniversary on May 14. The railroad was originally built to transport goods and people across Alaska during the early 1900s, and it continues to be an important transport link for the state to this day.
