1. In 1960, Truett Cathy opened the first Chick-fil-A restaurant in Hapeville, Georgia. The chain now has over 2,500 locations across the United States, including many in Florida.

2. In 1987, the Sunshine Skyway Bridge in St. Petersburg, Florida was struck by a cargo ship, causing a 1,200-foot section of the roadway to collapse. 35 people were killed in the tragedy, which remains one of the worst bridge disasters in United States history.

3. In 1996, the Florida Marlins played their first game at Joe Robbie Stadium (now Hard Rock Stadium) in Miami Gardens. The team would go on to win their first World Series just five years later.

4. In 2019, the state of Florida became the third state in the United States to formally apologize for its role in slavery. The resolution, passed by the state's Senate and House of Representatives, acknowledged the harm caused by slavery and pledged to work towards creating a more equitable future.

5. In 2020, SpaceX successfully launched its first crewed mission to the International Space Station from the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida. The launch marked the first time American astronauts had launched from American soil since the end of the space shuttle program in 2011.
