1. In 1776, Rhode Island declared independence from Great Britain, becoming the first colony to do so. This declaration was made two months prior to the signing of the Declaration of Independence by all thirteen colonies.

2. On May 16, 1778, the British attacked Warren, Rhode Island, known as the Battle of Warren. This battle was part of a larger campaign to control Narragansett Bay and was ultimately won by the British.

3. In 1881, the first electric streetcar ran in Providence, Rhode Island. The streetcar was a major transportation advancement and contributed greatly to the growth of Providence as a city.

4. On May 16, 1902, the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) held its very first commencement ceremony. RISD is now considered one of the most prestigious art schools in the world.

5. In 1961, the first McDonald's restaurant in Rhode Island opened in Warwick. This was a significant event in Rhode Island history as the fast-food chain would go on to become one of the most recognizable brands in the world.
