1. On May 2, 1882, the first train arrived in Tombstone, Arizona, marking the completion of the Southern Pacific railroad line from Tucson to the mining town. This new transportation link facilitated the shipment of silver and other minerals from Tombstone to markets across the country.

2. May 2, 1962, was the day Arizona Governor Paul Fannin signed into law the creation of the Arizona State University West campus in Phoenix. This campus would go on to become one of the largest institutions of higher education in the state, serving tens of thousands of students each year.

3. On May 2, 1899, Arizona's first state prison opened in Yuma. The prison housed some of the most notorious criminals of the time, including train robber Pearl Hart and convicted murderer Winnie Ruth Judd.

5. In 1998, May 2 was designated "Arizona Wildcat Day" by the state legislature, in honor of the University of Arizona's mascot, the Wildcat. The day is celebrated each year with parades, tailgate parties, and other festivities throughout the state.
