2. On May 2, 1835, James K. Polk was inaugurated as the ninth governor of Tennessee. Polk would go on to serve as President of the United States from 1845 to 1849.
3. In 1862, Union and Confederate forces clashed at the Battle of Elizabethton in East Tennessee. Despite being heavily outnumbered, the Union army under General George Stoneman was able to repel the Confederate attack and secure a decisive victory.
4. Knoxville, Tennessee was the site of a massive labor strike on May 2, 1933. Over 10,000 workers in the city participated in the strike, which lasted for several weeks and led to widespread unrest and violence.
5. The Tennessee Valley Authority was established on May 2, 1933. The federal agency was created as part of President Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal program and was charged with developing the economy and infrastructure of the Tennessee Valley region. The TVA remains a major presence in the region to this day.
