3. Ethan Allen surrenders Fort Ticonderoga
On May 22, 1775, Ethan Allen and his troops - the Green Mountain Boys - famously captured Fort Ticonderoga from the British during the Revolutionary War. However, just two years later, on May 22, 1777, Allen would surrender the fort to the British during the Battle of Ticonderoga.
4. Vermont's first state park is created

5. Abenaki artist wins prestigious MacArthur Fellowship
In 2018, Abenaki artist and basketmaker Theresa Secord was awarded a MacArthur Fellowship - commonly known as a "genius grant" - for her work preserving traditional Abenaki basketry techniques. Secord, who lives in Vermont, was one of just 25 people in the U.S. to receive the grant that year.
