1. In 1864, a group of Cheyenne and Arapaho Indians were massacred by U.S. soldiers at Sand Creek in southeastern Colorado. The Sand Creek Massacre remains one of the darkest moments in Colorado history and is considered a symbol of the violence and mistreatment suffered by Native Americans at the hands of white settlers.

2. In 1896, the city of Leadville was struck by a devastating fire that destroyed much of the downtown area. The fire, which started in a saloon, quickly spread due to high winds and a lack of firefighting resources. Over 100 buildings were destroyed and several people were killed.

3. In 1959, the first commercial jet flight landed at Denver's Stapleton Airport. The flight was operated by United Airlines and marked the beginning of a new era in air travel for the city.

4. In 1998, a tornado touched down near the town of Limon, causing significant damage and injuring several people. The tornado was unusual in that it occurred in the late afternoon, a time when tornadoes are less common in Colorado.

5. In 2010, a large wildfire broke out near the town of Estes Park, eventually burning over 10,000 acres of forest and forcing the evacuation of hundreds of residents. The fire was caused by a lightning strike and was one of the worst wildfires in Colorado history at the time.
