1. In 1865, Nevada became the first state to ratify the 13th Amendment to the United States Constitution, which abolished slavery and involuntary servitude.
2. On May 27, 1905, Las Vegas was founded when 110 acres of land were auctioned off as part of a railroad land sale.
3. In 1931, on May 27th, Governor Fred Balzar signed Assembly Bill 98, legalizing gambling in the state of Nevada.
4. On May 27, 1971, a series of earthquakes rattled the Reno area, with the largest measuring 6.0 on the Richter scale. The quakes caused some damage, but no deaths or serious injuries were reported.
5. In 1982, on May 27th, High Roller Ferris Wheel opened at the Linq in Las Vegas. It was the tallest Ferris wheel in the world at the time, and has since become a popular attraction on the Strip.
