2. On May 28, 1900, a fire destroyed most of the town of Ely, Nevada. The blaze began in the early morning hours and quickly spread, destroying over 50 buildings, including homes, businesses, and the town's schoolhouse.

3. In 1918, the first nonstop flight across the United States was completed by John Porte and his crew. The flight began in Mineola, New York and ended in San Francisco, California. The journey took a total of 22 hours and 27 minutes.

4. On May 28, 1937, the Boulder Dam (now known as the Hoover Dam) on the Nevada-Arizona border was officially dedicated by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. The massive dam, which was built during the Great Depression, helped to control floods, generate hydroelectric power, and provide irrigation for the surrounding area.

5. In 1993, the MGM Grand hotel and casino in Las Vegas suffered a massive fire that killed 85 people and injured more than 700 others. The blaze was one of the deadliest hotel fires in U.S. history and led to increased safety regulations for high-rise buildings.
