3. On May 3, 1887, the Idaho State Penitentiary officially opened in Boise. The prison housed some of the most notorious criminals in Idaho history, including Harry Orchard who assassinated former governor Frank Steunenberg.
4. In 1917, the Idaho State Legislature passed a bill establishing the Idaho State Historical Society. The society was tasked with the preservation and interpretation of Idaho's history and continues to operate today.
5. On May 3, 1863, a group of Nez Perce Indians attacked a wagon train near the Salmon River in what is now known as the Battle of Cottonwood. This event was part of the larger Nez Perce War and ultimately resulted in the Nez Perce being forced to relocate to a reservation.
