1. On May 4, 1865, Confederate General William T. Sherman arrived in Cheraw, South Carolina during his march through the state. The town surrendered without resistance, allowing for a peaceful occupation by Union forces.

2. On May 4, 1934, the first-ever baseball game was played at the newly built Greenville Municipal Stadium. The Greenville Spinners defeated the Asheville Tourists 6-1 in front of a crowd of over 4,000 fans.

3. May 4, 1979 marked the first day of operations for the Darlington Nuclear Generating Station in Darlington County. The station produces enough electricity to power approximately one million homes in South Carolina every day.

4. On May 4, 1996, the Hunley submarine was raised from the depths of the Charleston Harbor, where it had been sunk since 1864. The Confederate submarine made history by becoming the first submarine to sink an enemy ship in combat.

5. In May 4, 2007, South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford signed a bill into law that required moped drivers to have a valid driver's license or moped license to operate their vehicles on public roads. The law also required all mopeds to be registered with the state Department of Motor Vehicles.
