1. May 6, 1937: Hindenburg Disaster
One of the most tragic events in Massachusetts history was the Hindenburg disaster on May 6, 1937. The German airship caught fire and crashed to the ground in Lakehurst, New Jersey, killing 36 people. However, many of the survivors were taken to hospitals in Massachusetts for treatment.

2. May 6, 1839: Massachusetts Bans Corporal Punishment in Schools
On May 6, 1839, Massachusetts became the first state to ban corporal punishment in schools. The law prohibited teachers from using physical punishment to discipline students, and made it illegal to hit, slap or beat children in the classroom.

3. May 6, 1916: First U.S. Piloted Submarine Commissioned
On May 6, 1916, the first U.S. piloted submarine, the USS H-1, was commissioned in Quincy, Massachusetts. The H-1 was the first of a series of experimental submarines that were designed to test new technology and tactics in underwater warfare.

4. May 6, 1970: Kent State Shooting Protests
On May 4, 1970, four Kent State University students were killed by National Guardsmen during an anti-war protest in Ohio. On May 6, 1970, thousands of students across the country participated in a nationwide student strike to protest the shootings and the Vietnam War.

5. May 6, 1945: USS Massachusetts Joins the Pacific Fleet
On May 6, 1945, the USS Massachusetts, a battleship built in Quincy, Massachusetts, joined the U.S. Pacific Fleet. The ship was heavily involved in the Pacific Theater during World War II, and played a key role in the Battle of Leyte Gulf, one of the largest naval battles in history.
