1. The first public library in New Hampshire was established on November 1, 1750, in Portsmouth. It was called the Portsmouth Library and was originally organized as a subscription library with 93 founding members.
2. On November 1, 1785, the New Hampshire Legislature met for the first time in the newly built State House in Concord. The building still stands today and is one of the oldest capitol buildings in the country.
3. On November 1, 1832, the first rail line in New Hampshire was opened from Portsmouth to Concord. It was called the Portsmouth and Concord Railroad and was a major improvement in transportation for the state.
4. On November 1, 1966, the University of New Hampshire became the first college or university in the United States to have its own weather satellite. The satellite, called UNH-1, was designed and built by UNH scientists and engineers.
5. On November 1, 2003, the Old Man of the Mountain, a natural rock formation in Franconia Notch State Park that looked like a face, collapsed due to erosion and weathering. The Old Man had been a symbol of New Hampshire and appeared on the state quarter and license plates.
