1. In 1775, the Virginia Rampage began. The Virginia Rampage, also known as the Leedstown Resolves, was an early, peaceful revolutionary protest against British taxation that preceded the formation of the Continental Army. The protest culminated in a resolution that was adopted by the colonials, which stated that only the General Assembly, not Parliament, had the right to levy taxes on Virginians.

2. In 1831, the African Baptist Church was founded in Richmond. Members of this church would go on to play an essential role in the abolitionist movement by using their pulpits to preach against slavery.

3. In 1862, the Battle of Fredericksburg began. This battle, which took place during the American Civil War, was fought between Confederate General Robert E. Lee and Union General Ambrose Burnside. It was one of the deadliest battles of the war, with an estimated 13,000 Union soldiers killed, wounded, or missing.

4. In 1921, Douglas Wilder was born in Richmond. Douglas Wilder was the first African American to be elected governor of a US state, when he was elected governor of Virginia in 1989.

5. In 2019, Virginia became the 38th state to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA). The ERA is a proposed amendment to the US Constitution that would guarantee equal rights for all citizens regardless of sex. The amendment was first proposed in 1923 and has been the subject of ongoing debate and controversy.
