1. In 1745, the first naval battle of the French and Indian War took place off the coast of Cape Elizabeth, Maine. The British navy, led by Commodore Warren, captured the French ship "L'Entreprenant" after a fierce battle.

2. On November 28, 1887, Maine State College (now the University of Maine) played its first intercollegiate football game against the University of New Hampshire. Maine won the game 6-0.

3. In 1918, the Bangor Daily News reported the deaths of 100 U.S. soldiers from Maine who had been killed in World War I. This was the largest number of casualties reported in a single day during the war.

4. On November 28, 1942, the Portland Air National Guard Base was established. The base has been used for training and deployment of military personnel throughout its history.

5. In 1992, Maine voters approved a referendum to establish a state lottery. The lottery has since become a popular form of entertainment and revenue generator for the state.
