5. On November 7, 2000, Pennsylvania played a pivotal role in the presidential election between George W. Bush and Al Gore. The state's 23 electoral votes were initially declared for Gore, but after a recount, Bush was declared the winner by a margin of 0.5%. The outcome of the election was ultimately decided by the Supreme Court, which ruled in favor of Bush in the controversial case of Bush v. Gore.
