2. In 1895, the first gasoline-powered automobile race in the United States was held in Chicago, Illinois. One of the contestants was an Indiana automobile manufacturer named Elwood Haynes, whose car achieved a top speed of 7 miles per hour.

3. In 1913, the Indiana State Capitol building was destroyed by a catastrophic fire. The blaze began in the basement and quickly spread throughout the structure, causing extensive damage and nearly destroying the dome. Fortunately, all those inside were able to escape unharmed.

4. In 1960, John F. Kennedy won the presidential election, defeating Richard Nixon to become the first Catholic president and the youngest ever elected to the office. Although Kennedy lost Indiana to Nixon, his victory in other key states gave him enough electoral votes to win the election.

5. In 2016, the Indiana Pacers hosted the Boston Celtics in an NBA game at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. During the game, Pacers star Paul George scored 26 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, leading his team to a 123-107 victory over the Celtics. This was one of many memorable games played on November 8th in Indiana sports history.
